Kolkata Airport’s T2 terminal is undergoing a Rs 130-crore expansion to increase its passenger handling capacity. Sections of the terminal have been cordoned off to add more floor space in the domestic section. Additionally, a module will be constructed next to the international wing.
The expansion will add 5,600 sq. mtrs. (60,300 sq. ft.) and increase the annual passenger handling capacity to 2.8 crore, from the current from 2.6 crore. The expansion in the existing terminal and the two-level modular expansion at the end of the south-western end of the international terminal will create an additional space of around 3,000 sq. mtrs. in the departure level, and 2,600 sq. mtrs. (28,000 sq. ft.) in the arrival level.
The expansion in Kolkata, West Bengal will increase space in the boarding or security hold area, as well as the number of bus departure gates. An elevator is planned to be installed at the upper departure floor.
The capacity expansion in the terminal will complement the flight handling capacity, which is set to increase from 35 flights an hour to 45. Civil work for constructing a new taxiway and three new rapid exit taxiways has already been completed, and additional parking bays have been set up. The city airport has also set to expand beyond its current boundary to a 100-acre plot on the other side of VIP Road. Further, the staff quarters of AAI on the land to the west of VIP Road will be demolished and domestic and international cargo terminals and other auxiliary facilities will come up in the new section.
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has plans to undertake a larger two-phase capacity expansion also, involving the construction of a new terminal with a capacity of 1.1 crore passengers a year, followed by another terminal. The development will lead to an overall capacity of the airport terminals of 6.1 crore passengers per annum.
